about the exhibition

Artify Gallery is proud to present local emerging artist Vivian Ho’s latest works in Can’t Remember To Forget You. The exhibition explores an innovative journey centered on the concept of “micro-violence” through a series of work. The artist believes that each tiny physical mark on the body is an embodiment of our very emotions. She is eager to discover whether the impacts of emotion are identical in different individuals. Can’t Remember To Forget You will show at Artify Gallery from 26 May to 15 July 2016.

The exhibition centers on the concept of “micro-violence,” which is inspired by Ho’s observations of daily life where she has witnessed emotional outbursts from different people. Minor scars, bruises and bad habits, such as the biting of fingernails, are subconsciously triggered by our emotions. These physical marks are of trifling importance, yet they underlie enormous amounts of pressure and conflicting feelings. Ho attempts to explore this intimate relationship between our emotional interior and its manifestation on our physical exterior. Whether it is a bruised collarbone, a bandaged hand, or a smattering of burst blood vessels in a person’s eye, the artist pinpoints these body parts in her pastel drawings to highlight different socially acceptable forms of violence. The human form is a myriad of intense and interesting colours, which the artist employs in her own palette, thus allowing her to believe that each physical mark or blemish on the body is an original expression of beauty in its purest form. Ho’s vivid aesthetics, which are presented in rich layers, colours and delicate strokes, bring forth the dark side of consciousness and the imperfections found in people.

Can’t Remember To Forget Youis a continuation of Ho’s art exploration in her unique style. Her inspiration is always derived from daily life and she has a very deep interest to reveal the romantic irony of ordinary and flawed subjects. She thinks that the serene twist in emotion that brings out physical marks is a subtle reminder of our dark side. The body is a just container of our fears, anxieties, obsessions, abusive desires and self-denials. Memories are unreliable but physical marks never lie, and thus, the self-trapping and entanglement continues.
